1093 Letter to Parents (August 2006)

Dear Parent,

     My name is David and I have been teaching your child English for the past two months.  I am from America and have been working at Gram for about a year.  Teaching 1093 thus far has been very rewarding and I hope to continue making a difference in your child's life.  Your child has the benefit of having a foreign teacher full-time.  This means that your child will have to work harder to keep up with the curriculum.  Initially, the student may have a difficult time because they are forbidden to use Chinese in class, but, in the long run, the entire class will be better English speakers.  
     My teaching style relies heavily on homework and worksheets that require them to work hard outside of class.  I expect the students to involve their family and friends in the English learning process.  This means the student will be doing a lot of activities that require your participation.  I don't think that a student can learn the language effectively if they don't have the support of their family and friends.  I enjoy making many interesting worksheets that go beyond the standard curriculum and book requirements.  For example, I have recently began using crossword puzzles as a way to review the verbs and new vocabulary that are encountered in each unit that we are covering.  I think that the students will enjoy the challenge of the puzzles, and, at the same time, reinforce their vocabulary.  I concentrate less on reading than other teachers because I believe that the most effective way for a student to learn English is through conversation.  Asking questions and giving answers is a more difficult way of learning.  It's more difficult than reading and writing, but it's going to help them succeed at a much faster rate.  
     During class time, I stress participation and speaking.  I have set up groups in the class.  Each group contains three students.  Each of the groups is required to participate by raising their hands or coming to the front of the class ten times each class period.  This means that your child will be speaking in class at least 3 or 4 times every class.  If they don’t, they are punished.  I have found that this system works and they are all becoming much better students as a result.   Every class, your child will be given a quiz over the material that was assigned in the previous class.  I often give them two quizzes if they had a lot of homework.  As I said before, I have been teaching for about one year.  I am still developing many of my techniques and will continue to work at becoming a better teacher.
